Star Trek : Discovery S2
From Traditional VFX to Virtual Production | 従来のVFXからバーチャルプロダクションへ
Having worked on Star Trek: Discovery across all five seasons, I witnessed its evolution from traditional VFX to virtual production. The early seasons relied heavily on conventional workflows, but by Season 4, virtual production was integrated, transforming how environments and effects were created. This progression reflected the industry's broader shift, and being part of the transition provided invaluable insight into the changing landscape of filmmaking.

The Hiawatha
ハイアワサ
The USS Hiawatha was a Federation medical frigate that crashed on an asteroid in a dense debris field during the Klingon-Federation War, as seen in Star Trek: Discovery Season 2, Episode 1 – "Brother."

Getting Into the Destroyed Hiawatha

The USS Discovery investigates a mysterious red burst in space, leading them to the wreckage of the Hiawatha on a volatile asteroid.
The Hiawatha's destruction symbolizes the cost of war, showing how not all ships made it home.

The sequence featured detailed CG environments, a floating debris field, and zero-G sequences, making it a VFX-heavy moment in Season 2.
Our team worked on the sequence to turn the practical set into an abandoned space that resemble a destroyed space ship, this required some smart planning so we didn't need to replace every shot while keeping it all cohesive.

Gigantic Alien Sphere
巨大なエイリアン球体
A gigantic alien sphere, massive in scale, bewildering in design, and truly powerful -- looms out of the cosmic shadows, dwarfing Discovery to a veritable speck in space.

Devil in the Dark
暗い洞窟の悪魔
During Michael Burnham’s journey through the Mycelial Network in Star Trek: Discovery, she experiences visions of different worlds, one of which is a reference to "Devil in the Dark"—a classic Star Trek: The Original Series (TOS) episode. This was a DMP of the environment I created.

Klingon Council Chambers
クリンゴン評議会室
The Klingon Council Chambers in Star Trek: Discovery Season 2 is a grand, fire-lit hall on Qo'noS, where the Empire’s leaders clash over power and tradition. Its gothic, brutalist design reflects the honor and ruthlessness of Klingon politics, serving as the stage for Chancellor L’Rell’s fight to rule. Enhanced with VFX set extensions and atmospheric lighting, it brings the political heart of the Klingon Empire to life.

Klingon Council Chambers

In Star Trek: Discovery Season 2, the Klingon Council Chamber is shown in the First City on Qo'noS as a grand, cavernous space featuring fire pits, a central standing area, and a wall-mounted bat'leth, serving as the seat of the High Council and the empire's government. During this time, L'Rell, as the new Chancellor, presides over the council and uses its symbolic power and the threat of Starfleet's bomb to unify the houses and guide Klingon policy, including presenting a prototype D7-class battlecruiser as a symbol of unity.

The interior of the chamber also contains these crystal veins that glows inside the walls.
Xahea
ザヘア
Xahea is a small, highly advanced planet introduced in Star Trek: Discovery Season 2, Episode 13 – "Such Sweet Sorrow, Part 1". It is the homeworld of Queen Me Hani Ika Hali Ka Po (commonly known as Queen Po), a brilliant engineer and scientist who plays a key role in helping the USS Discovery.

Xahea

The planet has vast natural dilithium deposits, making it highly valuable and a target for external threats. Despite its small size, Xahea has cutting-edge technology, developed by its scientifically advanced society.
Xahea is depicted as a beautiful, green, and mineral-rich world, blending nature and technology. Xahea’s unique energy field and environmental visuals make it stand out as a truly futuristic alien world.
