Star Wars : The Mandalorian
Pioneering the Shift to Virtual Production | バーチャルプロダクションへの移行の先駆者
The Mandalorian marked a major industry shift, proving virtual production could revolutionize filmmaking with LED volumes and real-time rendering. While my team worked in a traditional VFX capacity, this was my first exposure to the technology. Seeing its impact firsthand sparked my deeper interest, leading me to explore real-time filmmaking in the years that followed.

Ugnaught Ranch
アグノート牧場
This is the ranch where Ugnaught taught Mando how to ride a blurrg, utilizing a hero HDRI and bg mountain setup, the base was from Death Valley and DMP alterations I helped create and was then used throughout the sequence. We then did customized DMP on the land and added lots of puddles to make the ground muddy and wet, where the CG rendered assets then sat on top.

The Blurrgs
ブラーグス
I helped the team with the final looks of the blurrgs and their variations. We actually explored a wide range of looks but ended up sticking a lot closer to the original look to stay true to the old designs. We explored eye variations, how to differentiate the domestic ones from the wild... markings, scars, paint marks etc, even given one cataract which the client loved and decided to use that on the Mudhorn instead which did make more sense since it lives in the cave.
Arvala Valley
アルバラ渓谷
This desert like muddy planet is where we mainly worked on. From the Razorcrest landing and Mando encountering the first blurrg attack by the Arvala Valley to Mando training on how to ride them by the Ugnaught at his ranch.... to eventually riding and traveling together on the mountain ridges across the mudplate terrains.

Blurrg Encounter
ブラーグス
The landing site was a big challenge for me as the client was not happy with the footage shot on the LED wall and I was in charge of re-designing it and making it work with 3 different light scenarios for all the sequences. I ended up handling it more traditionally by creating 3 hero DMPs that was used throughout the sequences.

Daytime Look

Dawn Look

Night Look
Arvala Ridge
アルヴァラリッジ
This was using a very basic scan and DMPed on top to enhance all the details as the heros travel across the Arvala badlands into the mountain areas, across the ridge.

The Jawa Camp
ジャワキャンプ
One of my favorite DMPs I had the pleasure of working on was this Jawa Camp shot. It was significant as it was the first shot that we did loved by the client and getting us the feedback of "you guys know what you are doing." Always a good feeling to know we have hit the mark and having the client recognize our works.

Tatooine Desert
タトゥイーン砂漠
This sequence came towards the end and we helped the guys in the PEK facility finish some shots and I worked on this shot's sky and background desert dunes. Fun to see the guys ride swoop bikes around the sands. Also comes with the sunset view as well with a beautiful color.

The Lava Terrain
溶岩の風景
Last but not least, right before the child was captured we had Ugnaught riding the blurr running from the storm troopers. We had lots of good vulcanic scans to work off of and great HDRI did the trick.

The Raptavian Attack
ラプタビアンの攻撃
In this sequence i helped provide some early concepts of the phaser attacks and how it'd illuminate the pockets of smokes in the space and allowing the audience to get a glimpse of the flying raptavians that are flapping their wings in the darkness of night, providing a sense of mystery and surprise as they hide and strike their unpredictable attacks through the fog of war.
