Behind the Scenes

Concept Art + Matte Painting + Environment Projections

Croutching Tiger Hidden Dragon : Sword of Destiny just got released on Netflix recently and now I get to share some hard worked shots with ya all. This was definitely one of the longest project I have worked on and we managed to deliver hundres of shots for this movie. Aside from normal matte paintings, I provided treeline/hills/mountain/sky/ elements to be used on the entire ice lake sequence. Here it is, highlights from the project that I was a part of, please enjoy and take a look at months of my life in 2015.

YVF, Vulture's Peak

Concept to finished Matte Painting, this was my favourite sequence in the show to work on.
Really helped that I went to ZhangJIaJie and photographed lots of great reference of these chinese mountains.

RPS, In front of City Gate Tower

Concept to finished Matte Painting, we were dealing with a full CG shot here.
After this concept, most of the closer up objects stalls and everything was then recreated using 3D models because the camera move was crazy.
This shot is a combined effort between myself and my talented supervisor Bojan Zoric.
I did the front section of the gate, and he did the vast CG city + palace extension in the back.
This was one of the biggest shots we did for this movie, so proud to see it finally done.

RGP, Night city rooftop jump

Full city extension with a 3D base, matte painted and projected back on geos in layers to bring back parallax.
I have done so many of these house extensions /ninja roof hopping set extensions now~
Still one of those most time consuming process and projections due to all the parallax buildings between each other and handling such heavy sets.

FLF, Frozen Lake Sequence

Concept to finished Matte Painting, set extensions.
I created the sky dome, mountain range, hills and tree elements and my dear boss Bojan Zoric took the elements I made and created a 360 dome for the sequence for all the other matte painters.
This particular shot is using new elements I made for this angle only and the series of shots following this key shot.
we shipped outs many shots from this sequence feels like we been on this ice lake forever.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

I managed to save a few shots without the crazy intense blue Lut, before they were taken down. Also for the sequence I did a large number of ice cracks to show impact on the attacks.

TCM, Sir Teh's Place

Talk about the most painful shot of them all, a full CG shot we created that had everybody working on it.
3D set with Matte Painting enhancements.
